Penn Hills Elementary Helps Incoming Kindergarteners Get Ready for a New Beginning

For a child preparing to start kindergarten, the first day of school can bring a mix of excitement, curiosity and a few nerves. New classrooms, new teachers and new routines can feel like a lot for a young learner.

That’s why Penn Hills School District spent the summer helping its newest students take those first steps toward kindergarten through a series of fun, engaging Kindergarten Transition activities at Penn Hills Elementary School and throughout the community.

Rather than waiting until the first day of school to introduce students to their new environment, the district gave incoming kindergarteners multiple opportunities to connect with future classmates, become familiar with school staff and begin building positive associations with learning.

The summer series began with Kinder Storytime at the Penn Hills Library, where students gathered with members of the Penn Hills Elementary team for an afternoon of books, stories and fun. Held in a familiar community setting, the storytime events gave children an opportunity to interact with educators while building important early skills such as listening, participating and following along with a group.

A second Kinder Storytime in July continued the focus on literacy while giving students another chance to see familiar faces and strengthen the connections they had begun making earlier in the summer.
The transition activities then moved to Penn Hills Elementary, where students had the opportunity to experience the school environment firsthand.

In July, Pigeon came to Penn Hills Elementary, bringing an interactive and playful experience to incoming kindergarteners. Through activities centered around the beloved character, students were encouraged to participate, explore and engage with others, all while becoming more comfortable in the place they will soon call their school.

The summer series concluded with Popsicles on the Playground with Pete the Cat on August 6. Students and families gathered at Penn Hills Elementary for a relaxed morning of fun, allowing children to spend time on the playground, meet members of the school community and continue building excitement for the start of kindergarten.

Each event offered something different, but together, the activities served an important purpose: helping students become more familiar with the people, places and experiences that will make up their kindergarten journey.

For families, the events also provided an opportunity to connect with Penn Hills Elementary staff, meet other families and begin developing relationships before the first day of school. Those early connections can help make the transition to kindergarten feel less overwhelming and more exciting.

The district’s approach to kindergarten readiness goes beyond academics. While early literacy and classroom readiness are important, helping children feel confident and connected is just as valuable.

By providing opportunities to read together, participate in activities, visit their future school and spend time with members of the Penn Hills Elementary community, the district is helping incoming kindergarteners begin their school journey before they ever walk through the doors on the first day.
